Training and Nutrition Seminar

                                                                 Daniel Jahn, CSCS, USAW

The Co-Owner and Director of Training and Education of Maximum Sports Conditioning, Daniel Jahn has been in and around sports training for 11 years. He played baseball at the University of Washington from 1997 until 2000 when a back injury ended his career. He was hired as an assistant baseball coach at the UW, and as an intern in the Husky weight room. He became a part-time assistant strength coach the following year, and then full-time in 2002. He was the head of Baseball, Softball, Swimming, and Volleyball, but also worked extensively with Football, and helped with Basketball and Soccer.

Along with training hundreds of collegiate athletes, including the 2005 NCAA National Championship Volleyball team at the UW, he has trained professionals of all backgrounds ranging from Mixed Martial Arts competitors to Olympic Snowboarders, held numerous clinics and seminars for youth of all sports, performed instructional training seminars for personal trainers, organized and facilitated strength and conditioning coaches’ clinics, organized summer baseball camps for kids, and is a part-time columnist for STACK magazine (articles written appear in April 05, Oct. 05, Nov. 05, Feb. 06).

Daniel’s philosophy on training soccer players stems from the sport-specific actions they need to build, and the tools that college coaches and professional scouts use to judge the ability and potential of goalies, defenders, midfielders & forwards. These are:

                                                           · Ability to receive & touch

                                                           · Ability to change directions quickly

                                                           · Ability to pass (crossing, range, accuracy)

                                                           · Ability to accelerate and decelerate quickly

                                                           · Ability to see the field (awareness)

                                                           · Ability to move the feet quickly and under control

                                                           · Ability to jump

Based on these skills, soccer players must develop joint stability, balance, and connective tissue strength through the ankle, knee, back and shoulders (to support and stabilize explosive jumping, sprinting, changing direction and decelerating), posterior chain strength and power (to develop strength through glutes, hips and legs for jumping ability and speed), reactive ability, quickness, endurance and lateral speed (for first-step quickness and defensive ability), and core strength (to stabilize lower lumbar spine and to aid in control of large motor movements).

Although each position has its unique demands, all soccer players must improve these essential basic motor abilities. A soccer player's ability to run is most often judged by his/her times in a 40 yard sprint. His/her ability
to change directions quickly is most often judged by his/her time in a 20 yard shuttle.

To excel in competitive sports, training is absolutely essential. Performance nutrition is crucial to training harder, longer and more efficiently. Without proper nutrient intake and balance, an athlete cannot sustain a high level of training or competition. Daniel will introduce athletes to understanding which nutrients are essential, how to implement them into their daily diets, and how to maintain their diets to promote a prolonged career.  For more information on Daniel or his training programs, please visit
